Consequences - The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly!
Surely you have been told many times to think before you act. What you are really being told is to take time to think about the consequences of your decision before you choose. This takes practice. We already know that we make upwards of 17,000 decisions everyday. Well, a set of consequences is accompanied with each and every one. Some consequences are good, some are bad, and some really don't matter too much at all.
"If you're going to do something tonight that you'll be sorry for tomorrow morning,...sleep late." - Henry Youngman
When you face a decision, you automatically think about the immediate result - what will happen right now. But it is a lot tougher to think about the long-term consequences - what will happen in the future as a result of your actions.
For example, driving home drunk after a party is less of a hassle than getting a cab or walking home. However, you are taking a horrendous risk you could injure or even kill yourself and others.
Obviously, all the decisions you make affect you in some way. Like most people, you mostly only think about how your decisions will affect you. However, a great amount of decisions you make affect other people, too.
It's easy to get caught up in the present and only think about how immediate results of your decisions. It's also easy to only think about how those results will affect you. Exceed the normal expectations of society - take the time to weigh both the short-term and long-term consequences and who they will affect. It will make life much easier later on.
"For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction." - Isaac Newton
